Calgary, Banff, & Jasper in Early May

My brother (22m) and I (25f) are going to Calgary, Banff & Jasper for the first time next week. We will be road tripping for a week and, while we are so excited, we have a few concerns.

1) BEARS. Nearly everything we’ve read said to beware of bears, especially in Jasper. How likely is it that we’ll run into bears? We will be hiking a lot so we want to know if we’ll need bear spray. What do we do if we encounter a bear?

2) Road conditions. Given that we’ll be driving a lot and our rental car won’t have snow tires, we are worried that driving conditions will be harsh. Does anyone know what the driving to Calvary - Banff, Banff - Jasper, and Jasper - Calgary will be like next week?

3) Hikes & Outdoor activities. Several blogs say that the first week of May is a weird in between for the seasons. Does anyone know which hikes are open and safe? What outdoor activities are available right now? We would love to hike to see views of Lake Louise and even kayak there. Is this available during the spring?

4) Anything else we need to know? Are there things that we “must see” or “must do”?

Thanks in advance:)
