I don’t understand why I am being laid off

So to clarify I am NOT a seasonal worker. I have been working at my current store as a part-time for over 2 years since Aug 2022. I also briefly worked as a seasonal at another store in winter of 2021~2022.

I got an internship (that had started this week) and I temporarily changed my availability to Friday evenings and Saturday all day for the next 3 months. I specifically told them that I do not work on Sundays because of religious practice. Back when I was in school I only worked on Fridays and Saturdays as well.

I received a call on Thursday and I assumed it was about the store being closed on Friday because of snowy weather. Well my store Manager said that my position at my store is no longer valid and that I can reapply to any where in the company again. Basically treating me as I am a seasonal, fighting for a permanent position, despite being part of my store for 2 years. He said higher ups said the hours of two days I am working ( which is 3~9:30 on Friday and all day Saturday) wasn’t enough and that they have to let me go. My scheduled shifts for the rest of the month are being taken off of dayforce.

I am confused because there are other people in the store who work weekends only, not just me. A (former)keyholder who is in grad school, and a college student who has school, another who has an internship during the week like me, and someone who has their main job during the week. I was so shocked and upset at the news that I did not point this out during the call.

After calming down I texted my coworkers. It seems that im the only one off the regular roster that is being laid off. I am upset because ive been working 2 and half years at my store and i dont understand why i am the only one out of the those who are working weekend being laid off. Especially because i told them it’s temporary and i ll be back to open schedule starting April, and they had let me work only two days when i did have school.

To make matters worse, 1) i was supposed to work yesterday, but our store closed due to the weather. Today is my last day. 2) my manager will be on vacation starting today and won’t be able to contact him till Jan 20.

I’ve been living off of pay check by paycheck in 2024 and despite my internship I was counting on the two days of barnes n noble for groceries and gas.

TLDR: I just got laid off despite being a regular part timer not a seasonal, and was the only one.
