Best short scale bass guitar

Hello ! I’ve got a question I’m hoping you guys can help me with!?

I really want to get a short scale bass, mainly because I feel so comfortable playing my friend’s fender mustang. However, I find that it goes out of tune quite frequently (sometimes even during a set) it also does not sound right high up on the fretboard.

My friend said that this might be because their bass is just the cheapest one they could get. My question is, is there a different make that produces excellent quality short scale basses? Or am I better off finding a mustang that has been well made and set up correctly.

The bass I use for gigs and recording is a fender p bass and is perfect apart from it being massive and I’m not a big person so it’s a bit clunky to play and i don't feel like i can move around as freely as with the mustang.
