How to drive a screw through wood without splitting?

I even drilled a full hole through the wood. I put my electric screw driver into a lower setting (3 from 10). But still the wood split. The other one worked just fine. Lucky for me this does not matter too much as it is just some test, but would love to understand what I did wrong. Thank you.
