How to use dragon communion build

Been playing around with a dragon communion build and it's been fun. Particularly using dragonmaw is satisfying cuz of the big chomp damage. But I can't seem to figure out how to land these incants on faster bosses without trading damage unless the boss is just idling in front of me, so I went with a tankier build. Is it that normal or am I playing bad?
