Unpopular opinion: The west is screwed and there's not much we can do
I think the recent years show that if anything, the gap to LPLCK is widening. And it makes sense:
First, there's no such thing as work-life balance in Asia. These maniacs just practice all day long! So can we copy that and force our boyz to train for 12 hours a day? I don't think so. Despite being illegal, it's just not compatible with our culture. And I honestly believe that Caps and co deserve some fun and happiness besides LoL in their life.
Second, there's the knowledge gap from playing and scrimming in the better region. It both affects draft and gameplay, and it's growing year by year. Yes, the meta does change with each patch, but the synergies and counters between champions don't. 2019 G2 was able to surprise eastern teams with some crazy picks, but I doubt the same thing would still be possible still. These experienced players have seen everything. I wouldn't be surprised if all eastern teams had played the Heimerdinger counter to Kalista a hundred times, while Rogue couldn't imagine it in their wildest dreams.
I'm sure there's also a big scrim bubble at worlds: Would you schedule a lot of games with Rogue if you could scrim against Faker instead? I don't think so!
So where does that leave us? Would signing Viper have saved us, if that was even a thing? I don't think so. I believe we could literally have signed the complete EDG roster, and within a year the lack of practice against the best would let them fall behind enough to become irrelevant at worlds.
So, what can and should we do?
1) Be more humble. Don't expect competing for world, but celebrate each victory against LPLCK like it was our last - because it might well be just that! Be happy our fresh roster almost won both splits instead of shitting on them for losing at worlds. But Carlos said the goal is worlds? Yeah, he says a lot, in case you didn't notice... And of course, it's always fine to have a dream.
2) Tryhard in scrims. It seems Rogue is the only team giving a hundred percent in scrims, and while exposing some counter strategies against them, it led to the most clean gameplay we have seen in LEC so far. Imagine to have ten teams like that in LEC - wouldn't that be nice?
3) This might be crazy, but did anyone do serious research about using machine learning for draft and champion pool optimization? As someone a little invested in that field, I feel like this might have a huge potential, and the first team to successfully use this might gain a huge draft advantage.
