Mortgage Verification

I’m in HR and handle mortgage verifications as they come in. Recently we had a reduction in force and let a handful of employees go. One employee was in the middle of doing a refinance as he’s going through a divorce. The company decided to keep him on payroll until April instead of paying a lump sum severance. He shows ‘employed’ in our HR system but is not working for us and does not have access to any systems.

Sure enough the mortgage company reached out asking if he was still employed. I sent it to my manager and stated I did not feel comfortable responding. She did and told the mortgage company he is working for us. I personally don’t feel good about the whole situation and it’s nagging at me. I feel for the employee but could this come back to me as I knew he wasn’t really employed?
