Help my starter double!

My starter is not doubling. I started it on the 10th and started out using this recipe https://www.theclevercarrot.com/2019/03/beginner-sourdough-starter-recipe/ Then after day 10 I felt like I had too much so I put 50g of starter in a jar and fed 50 g water 50g. So now every day I discard 50g and then feed 50g flour and 50g water. Sometimes I add more flour when it feels really thin. It went through the rancid gym sock phase. Now it smells like rubbing alcohol. Which I think is good? It rises a little bit, but no where near doubles. When I mix it before discard, I can tell it’s very airy. I change the jar every few days to keep it clean (i know it’s messy right now). The temp of my house is 70F but I placed it on a dishtowel to help keep it off the cool counter. I want to keep going but should I adjust my discard/feed grams? Do I just keep going as is?
