HSBC Global Money vs Barclaycard Rewards for Japan holiday

Hi,

Apologies if this is the wrong sub, it relates to an overseas trip but I am from the UK and so refers to UK finance products but please feel free to mod appropriately!

We're going on holiday to Japan in April this year. I have a Barclaycard Rewards Visa which I normally use for travel overseas as they offer no fees for foreign currency purchases and the odd time I do need cash they don't charge for ATM withdrawals. I read that a lot of places in Japan will only accept cash so expect I'll be using ATMs quite a bit more while we're there.

I have recently got an HSBC Global Money account and notice that Yen is one of their supported holding currencies so am not sure if this would be a better option for us.

They both claim to use the VISA exchange rate when converting so aside from the fact that the Barclaycard is a credit and HSBC is a debit card and so there will be differences between when the foreign exchange rate will be applied is there anything else I should consider when using one over the other that I might have missed?

To my eye they seem broadly equivalent, I always pay the statement balance in full on the Barclaycard so no credit interest to worry about.

Cheers

Rich
