Was using an apostrophe for "its" ever considered correct in spelling the possessive pronoun.

I may be experiencing the Mandela Effect, but I could have sworn when I was younger, I was taught to use an apostrophe at the end of "its" when spelling the possessive pronoun. I had been using the apostrophe for years and was never called out on it until this week when my manager was reviewing a draft memo I typed up and led to me Googling the correct grammar in their office.

I've run into a few other posts of people describing the same issue but haven't really found an answer whether the apostrophe was accepted in the past and then changed at some point or if we all had bad English teachers at some point and it stuck.

ETA: And of course I didn't use a question mark in my headline in the grammar subreddit and now can't correct it. *Facepalm*
