Linux on MacBook air i3

Disclaimer, I'm completely new to Linux, just installed mint on my x230 2 weeks ago.

Found a 2020 i3 MacBook air that was laying around that my brother brought in. I've heard these i3 MacBook airs are really slow and was a borderline scam from apple. Wondering if putting Linux on this will make it usable?

Any advice? Can I just try running mint from a live usb?
