Tips and tricks for separation anxiety
Hi all,
I’ve had my 9-month-old standard poodle for a little over two months. She’s a calm and wonderful girl - except when left alone. She’s never been destructive, so I let her free roam in our main living space, where she spends most of her time, including being alone. She’s relaxed as long as someone is home, but as soon as I leave, she runs to the door, listens for sounds, then starts whining and barking.
I’ve been using gradual exposure with short absences, only returning when she’s quiet, but I’m struggling to see progress. She ignores high-value chews like a bully stick, and while a stuffed Kong or lick mat keeps her occupied briefly, she goes right back to the door afterward.
I’d love any tips on what helped your pup with separation anxiety! I’m also starting to read Be Right Back since I’ve heard great things about it.
