Anti scratch mittens necessary?

I told my mom about the baby shopping we did and asked her about some things I was unsure about. The checklist I used had a bunch of stuff, some of it unnecessary, on it and when I asked her what "anti scratch mittens" were, she said they were important to prevent babies from scratching themselves with their sharp nails and that she had them for us back then.

I have never heard about anti scratch mittens before. No other pregnancy app, article or mother ever mentioned them before, so I didn't even know such a thing existed and as a conclusion thought that it is just another gadget you don't actually need.

I also thought that in the beginning the baby will be swaddled and/or supervised most of the time, so the risk of them scratching themselves wouldn't be THAT big. We also have a manicure set to trim and file the nails so they are not too long and less sharp. I expected that to be safe enough, but my mom was raving so hard about these gloves and told me we should definitely get some.

Now I am curious whether you bought them or are planning on getting them for your babies and if someone here has experience with them and can tell me if they are really needed.
