Prints blank when asked to print in B&W, otherwise prints choppy and with hollow letters

Cartridges Used: | Refill 188 Epson Ink

--What steps you have already tried?

All printer maintenance options in setup menu on printer (this somehow drained all the black ink)
Tried cleaning the print nozzles as best as I could without any special equipment (used 90% isopropyl, EPSON forgive me)
Finally drained black ink low enough that I got a message asking if I wanted to print composite black instead of only black. This is when the test page started looking a bit better. You can see the two images attached.

Seems like it might be an issue with the Black nozzle being crusty? I was thinking of getting that special tube and syringe to flush it.
