i lasted one month working for doordash
i tried doordashing to see how quickly i could make a couple bands but i quickly became depressed at how bleak the whole operation is.
you start a “shift” and then the mysterious algorithm wizard gives you “offers”. you see how much you’ll make for the quest and how many miles it will be between the restaurant and the customer’s location.
for the first 50 deliveries, they suck you in by giving you great offers with big tips so you think “wow i could actually make good money doing this.” then you reach 50 deliveries and the algorithm wizard changes his tune. 80% of the offers are customers who live 10-15 miles away with a $0-3 tip. door dash’s base pay is $2. so you’re essentially earning at most $6 for 45-60 minutes of work.
of course you can decline the shitty offers but then you’re left waiting for a good one and when i say good i mean maaaybe a $10-$15 profit for 30 minutes of work.
then you’ve got the customers who make wild demands and threaten you in the drop-off instructions. i got a note that said “my food better not be cold when it gets here or else”. or else what???
lastly waiting for food at nicer restaurants was low key sad and embarrassing because while i’m working for pennies in my sweatpants, i’m watching groups of women my age laugh with each other as they sip on their cute lil cocktails, all dressed up on a saturday night. made me feel like an ogre and a loser.
anyway i decided to leave the dashing life behind me, making a grand total of $560.
