[FREE] Bavaria-centric giveaway coming up; advice requested!
Hello you lovely people!
I'll be on my way back to my parents' house in Germany next week, to clear out the attic.
I've stored lots of old gear there with the vague plan of eBaying it all off, "some day".
Well, I'd rather a community like this one gets it, so I'll be making a list and giving it away. I believe this to be in line with Rule #1, but do correct me if not!
From memory, there's at least one Sinclair ZX Spectrum, there's the 1983 Compaq "Portable" (if you're the Hulk) that needs to be recapped, there's Athlons and Durons and a Cyrix 5x86 and an intel 10/100 hub with the loudest fan you'll ever hear (I guess the high-speed packets caused heat through friction).
There's that graphics card that competed with 3Dfx Voodoo by not rendering triangles that were invisible/occluded that I can't remember the name of and which was a rhymes-with-witch to get working with Hitman; there's PS/2 and DIN keyboards (mostly German layout). There's also, on the pro computing side, artefacts from the ReliantUNIX, SINIX, Tru64 UNIX days - manuals and bookshelf-sized cardboard boxes and collections of diskettes. There's MS Office on about 30 3.5"ers, .. I'll make the list when I'm there.
Some of these might better suit a vintage computer museum than a hobbyist, granted.
But, if anyone's keen and in the greater Munich area (an hour's drive, past the airport), and there's a chance that I'll see some of the gear in a future post right here, I'd dig that.
Also, I'm at GMT+8, I know about the time zone thing and not being able to get something long hunted for. I absolutely will ship internationally (smaller items/your postage though) if you can give me a good enough reason. (Also nationally, duh!). Ideally I'd offload to a Bavarian member to coordinate in that case, as I'll only be in Europe for a brief time span.
For those who have done something like this: what's the ideal procedure? Whip up a web page with pictures, descriptions and contact details, strike them off on a first-come, first-serve basis? Do an announced garage "sale" where you rock up, state your preferences and duke it out with any competing interested parties after a round of cake, coffee and BOFH stories? Post right here?
Cheers! 🙏🏼
