Why can’t I function with less than 8 hours of sleep

For context I am 16 years old and I struggle to stay awake during school, and after, despite having 8+ hours of sleep every day. I have a lot of friends that do fine on 6 hours of sleep(side note: they don’t do this every day that is unsustainable) , but idk why I can’t function that way. Note:my tiredness progressively gets worse throughout the day. Is there something I can do to boost my energy levels? Please help.
