Am I really supposed to figure out Barbuta without a guide

Been struggling with this game for hours, just running around in circles not getting anywhere meaningful. I have a pin and an umbrella, and a few leads but I have no idea where to go next. I hear people have already cherry'd this game. Has anyone beaten this game without a guide, and, if so, what was your experience?
